Maui, HI – Innovative portable reed instruments Maui Xaphoon and Maui Pocket Sax will be bundled with accessories and other popular items as part of new promotional Pro Pack and the Starter Set offers, it was announced today by Gary Friedman, Director of Sales for Maui Xaphoon USA.
“We are excited to give new players an inexpensive way to easily make great music and experienced professionals a tremendous value for a high-quality instrument with a wonderful sound they can use in numerous settings,” said Friedman.  Popular among professionals, enthusiasts and beginners alike, the Maui Xaphoon resembles a recorder, uses a tenor saxophone reed, is light and easy to play and produces music that sounds like a saxophone or a clarinet.
“People simply can’t believe that such a big sound comes out of such a small instrument, and its unmatched portability is why many professionals love the Xaphoon,” said Friedman.
The Pro Pack includes a handmade Maui Xaphoon (bamboo instrument tuned to Bb), a Rovner pro ligature, a Legere synthetic reed, a handmade suede case, the Xaphoon: How Its Made – How to Play DVD, and the Maui Xaphoon Jungle Jazz CD featuring performances of popular songs by Wittman.  The Starter Set includes a Xaphoon Pocket Sax in Classic Black, a Nepali case, the Xaphoon on My Mind instructional course book and CD, the Xaphoon: How Its Made – How to Play DVD, and the Maui Xaphoon Jungle Jazz CD. Purchased separately, the Pro Pack would cost nearly $300 and is being offered for $250; the Starter Set would cost $175 and is priced at $150.  The offers are available exclusively through the Maui Xaphoon website at www.xaphoon.com.
The Maui Xaphoon was created in 1978 out of wild bamboo in Maui by Brian Wittman, a musician seeking a way to play and enjoy music that was more portable than traditional instruments but still produced great sound.
“I was like so many people who love to play and spread musical joy, but never had their instrument handy when the inspiration struck, so I created an instrument that is totally portable, easy to play and sounds great,” said Wittman.
After trying several different approaches, Wittman identified an ideal combination of raw materials, precise engineering and hand-made production to create the first instrument, which he named the Xaphoon (short for “Bamboozaphone”).  The Xaphoon was an instant hit in Hawaii, became a gift catalog best-seller and has been honored with a Best In Show Award at the prestigious NAMM show.
The success of the original Xaphoon among both professional musicians and beginners led Wittman to create a less expensive, more durable model that could produce the beautiful sound of the original bamboo Xaphoon.  In 2000, he introduced an acrylic-molded version called the Xaphoon Pocket Sax that combined the best characteristics of the bamboo model with indestructible ABS plastic.  The materials and production process allowed The Xaphoon Pocket Sax to be produced in numerous vibrant and attractive colors and sold at a lower price than the original hand-produced bamboo models.  Initially offered in Classic Black, the Xaphoon Pocket Sax gained immediate popularity among educators and beginners and is now available in Wine Red, Emerald Green, Cobalt Blue, Royal White and Antique Gold.
“Portable and easy to play, the Maui Xaphoon and the Xaphoon Pocket Sax give musicians and enthusiasts a fantastic resource for making great music almost anywhere they can imagine,” said Wittman.
