Comparing different brands  and strengths of reeds
Mar 10th, 2008, 7:42pm

Having played a little sax and clarinet in the past (not a good player though), when I got my Pocket Sax, I decided to go buy a few different reeds to see which I liked on it.

It came with a Rico 2.5, so I thought I'd get a 2.0 and a 1.5.  The shop had a Rico 1.5, but no 2.0s, and they suggested I try a Vandoren 1.5, as that's about the same strength as a Rico 2.0.

I am glad I tried it, as it has a very nice tone.  The Rico 1.5 sounds like a kazoo, and the Rico 2.5 is OK, but the Vandoren 1.5 is sweet sounding, and for me, easier to control.

btw:  the music store had never heard of a Xaphoon (I took it in with me) and were astonished at it's sound

Ho for the Xaphoon at the music store - the guys there sure had something to learn!

As for brands and thickness: Everyone should experiment. I landed with baritone saxophone reeds (2.5 to 3.0), and I'm very happy with them, but they may or may not work for you, so "try it out" is the best tip one can give or receive Smiley

Favorite one so far was a Tenor Wandoren Jazz 4... Kiss

but it sadly came to its natural end a few weeks ago (I do actually take little care of my reeds, it could be considered as a possible improvement point Roll Eyes )...

I now play on the same wandoren Jazz, but on 3.5... sounds all right too after some time.

I actually do not pay for my reeds: my brother in law is a pro sax player and he keeps them all in a box, usually played 1 or 2 weeks only... even less sometimes.

I consequently have to play the reeds HE likes  Grin
